We Don’t Want Middle Easterners Here

Mercer makes another bold statement

“If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America: dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes. And they mix. They mix in. And those people, their only, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally?”

What should the reaction be to someone who says that we do not want people of Middle East descent in the country legally? What should the reaction be to such hate speech? In the Republican Party, the reaction is: let’s run her for Congress!
 - Bill Buck for CBS Tampa

When I found this story, at first I thought, finally. Jan Brewer hit her limit with racist rhetoric coming out of Arizona Republicans. But no, not really...she just doesn't want to be seen with one of them.

Just when you think you’ve reached the bottom of GOP racism, you realize there is no bottom.
-Josh Marshall, TPM

My question is who are you to decide who is allowed to immigrate to the United States? You're a Mexican immigrant . How would you feel if someone ran on the "Mexicans are invading the US, we need to halt these criminals from crossing the Rio!" platform. I would never vote for such a racist person. It's un-American.You Gabriela are a racist person. It's why I hope you lose this election by such a wide margin that you never step foot in politics again.

Obviously, Mercer isn’t expounding on illegal immigration. She’s just spewing forth her own prejudice.

Oh no. Someone has been spending way too much time hanging out with Rep. Trent Franks, and wants to join him in his religious bigotry McCarthyism ... Maybe they should spend some time traveling in the "Middle East" and the wider Muslim world and actually learn something about the wide variety of nationalities, tribal sects, religion sects (including Christians!), languages and cultures, etc., instead of reducing everyone to a cartoon caricature stereotype that lives in their mind out of their own ignorance, bigotry and irrational fear.

* And in Arizona, Republican congressional candidate Gabriela Saucedo Mercer is raising eyebrows for saying she wants to end legal immigration for all Middle Easterners.

Reacting to Grijalva’s republication of Mercer’s remarks, Imraan Siddiqi, a board member of Arizona’s chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, demanded that Arizona Republicans recognize her mentality for what it is: “Bigoted.”
“We urge responsible leaders of the Republican Party in Arizona and nationwide to repudiate Ms. Mercer’s bigoted comments,” he said in prepared text on Wednesday. “Her un-American and intolerant remarks are an insult to the millions of Americans of Middle Eastern heritage who have contributed so much to this great nation.”

"We had to allow people to see that (tape) so they could begin to distinguish between that kind of extremist rhetoric and the fact that we have a difference in issues that people must evaluate. She said that. It was not spliced. We didn't take it out of context. The whole interview is there for anyone to watch. Those are not my (words), we didn't fabricate them or put them in her mouth, it came out of her own month, and there'll be others."

The funniest part of Gabrielle Saucedo Mercer’s response to the kerfuffle over her racist comments in an interview she did for a far right website is her assertion that the video was doctored by Raúl Grijalva’s campaign. It’s funny because the video that’s circulating is the one that was posted by the publication that interviewed her.

Her opponent, rabid marxist Antonia Grijalva, made the video and had this to say:
“This is reckless hate speech, and I call on everyone who has endorsed Gabriela Mercer to withdraw their support immediately … her comments are reprehensible and deserve condemnation from every quarter,”
As much as I hate to agree with this turd, I do agree with his condemnation of her words. I don’t agree that people should be bullied into withdrawing their support. I condemn what she said.
While it is her right, and I support that right with my life, she is running for U.S. office. That office will require her to represent many middle eastern immigrants. She should know better.

“I found it quite disturbing that someone trying to represent the people of Arizona would make those statements. I hope she considers an elaboration or an apology.”

ADC has tried to decipher and understand the logic behind such comments; however a conclusion was made that Mercer does not use any logic when she moves her lips to speak. Similar findings have been made about other politicians who engage in such rhetoric. The illogical comments and statements are rooted in xenophobia and have no place in politics or our national discourse.
The use of such language once again exemplifies the bigotry and racism rampant within the Republican party, and politics as a whole. The comments are in line with similar remarks made by other politicians, such as Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois (R). The continued use of such language has led to an increase in hate crimes and violent attacks on Arab, Muslim, Sikh and South Asian communities.

Republican efforts to promote hatred across racial and religious lines are heating up this electoral season. They have found a new warrior to promote the cause in Arizona, Gabriela Saucedo Mercer. Mercer has questioned whether Middle Easterners should be in the US “either legally or illegally”

Get Van Morrison on the phone – according to Gabby "I'm On the Inside Now, So Let's Lock The Door" Mercer, his "Brown Eyed Girl" was probably a Middle Eastern terrorist spy.
-Tuscon Sentinel

"I am disappointed in Gabriela Saucedo Mercer's decision to inject division and fear into the election in Arizona's Third District ... America was founded on the fundamental belief in liberty in justice for ALL, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or background."

“I can assure you that she has no blanket bias against people from the Middle East. Maybe she should have said terrorist-oriented Middle Easterners.”
-Ted Mercer

Yeah, she blew in it. If you are going to run with the big dogs, you can’t be out there pissing on your own leg.
-R.D. Walker

She reminded me of Ken Bennett who threatened to keep Barack Obama off the November ballot if Obama couldn’t prove he was really born in the United States, but at least he apologized!!! OMG!! this can't be real, can it?!  I don't know exactly where this fantasy comes from, why in the eyes of so many Republicans including Gabriela Mercer, Middle Eastern immigrants are just out to get America and " their only goal was to harm the United States" ??!!!  My logic tells me that Jesus, the Spanish, Greeks, Italians and even Israelis are soon going to be on the Republicans' black list because they "look like" Mexicans !!  I hope the voters in Arizona know whom they'd be electing.
-Sawsan, Sodahead

[Grijalva will] now go up against racist sociopath Gabriela Saucedo Mercer ... Fellow over-the-top racists Jan Brewer and Secretary of State Ken Bennett are sticking with their whack-a-doodle candidate... of course.
