Footnote from Mercer's Political History

  • March 2011 - Gabriela Saucedo Mercer announces run: The journal Inside Tuscon Business described the announcement "that she wants to challenge five-term incumbent Raúl Grijalva next year [as] underwhelming, filled with the usual conservative rhetoric on social issues and not much else."

The Arizona Daily Independent had a different take on her campaign launch, reporting that in the wake of a national boycott of the state (that the ADI blames on Grijalva), "Saucedo Mercer’s campaign headquarters were opened to a bipartisan throng of supporters."

“As soon as people knew we were here, they began coming by and telling us how excited they were that we were in the neighborhood and urging me to end Grijalva’s campaign against the good people of Arizona,” ADI reporter her saying.

Carolyn Classen also wrote an announcement for the Tuscon Citizen where she states "I happened to be at the Tucson City Council meeting last Spring when Gabriela stood up & spoke against the Council’s opposition of SB 1070, and Congressman’s Grijalva’s call for a boycott of the State of Arizona. Most of the Mexican Americans in the room spoke against SB 1070."

More recently, David Fitzsimmons for the Arizona Daily Star said "Tea-publican Gabriela Saucedo Mercer will face Raúl Grijalva in November. Mercer has the support of Jan Brewer who, after seeing Mercer's papers were in order, gave her a warm endorsement and a "Get out of Jail Free" card from Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Brewer told her, "We love you people.""
